Hidden Tips

To make the most of the hotel’s fabulous setting, take some time out to sit and relax on the enormous sun terrace. A cream tea or a glass of wine from the hotel bar, with a comfortable chair from which you can just absorb those superb, uninterrupted views stretching out over the sea. Viewing ships as they pass along the English Channel, and enjoying peace in the garden, are an integral part of the charm of the hotel and an ideal way to round off one’s stay.

For those who are interested and energetic, the local cliff tops can be explored by following this breathtaking cliff path from the hotel and within a short distance, stretch out for miles. A favorite and not too strenuous walk heads south to picture-postcard Bonchurch, then on to Ventnor. It says the scenery along this stretch of the coast path is outstanding and I have a feeling that is absolutely right. You can catch one of the regular buses back to Shanklin which makes it an ideal simple linear walk.

For a very memorable evening, visit Shanklin Chine when it is illuminated a certain time (usually between 9 and 11, call to confirm). The whole gorge, waterfalls, and serpentine pathways are all lit with hundreds of multi-colored lights, creating that totally magical ambiance very different from what one experiences during the day. Located just a short walk from the hotel in the Old Village.

The Inn has traditional dining rooms but if you fancy a pint elsewhere try one of the fine bars in the Old Village, such as The Village Inn or The Crab Inn with a beer garden industriously tucked away, for that classic pub lunch and a pot of local ale. It’s got a notably historic atmosphere and tends to host an easier-going approach to dining, and it’s all within a few minutes’ jaunt from the hotel.
